The purpose of the uniform policy for St. Joseph School is to promote a standard of excellence. It is to be understood that no time will be spent on what students are wearing because each person follows this policy. The uniform closet is available to everyone throughout the year. Purchase of new uniforms must follow these directives. Students are to be in the correct uniform each day and use all of their efforts to focus on what is important – their learning and advancement.
Preschool:
Children learn through many different activities. Paints, shaving cream, playdoh, glue, markers, and all kinds of learning tools will be used. Children should wear comfortable play clothes which are appropriate for pre-school. Students must be able to handle their clothes for restroom breaks.
All pre-school students must wear tennis shoes each day.
All students, including preschoolers, are expected to wear dressier clothes on mass days. (No jeans, shorts, or any clothes inappropriate for mass.) Dress shoes may be worn on dress-up mass uniform days only.
Uniform for Students of Grades K-8:
Pants:
All students in grades K-8 wear solid navy blue slacks at the waist with no decorations.
Students in grades 7 and 8 may wear solid navy blue or khaki.
Belt:
Optional. (Black, navy blue or brown only)
Shirt:
Any SOLID color of shirt that has buttons and a lay-down collar may be worn on days when
students do not have gym or mass. The shirts may be short or long-sleeved with no trim of any
kind.They may be worn on the outside of pants and skirts if they have a straight cut and are no
longer than the middle of the hip. U-cut and long shirts must be worn inside of pants and skirts.
Dress shirts/blouses for mass days must be solid white only, no trim of any kind, and must be worn inside pants, jumpers, and skirts no matter what kind of cut.
Jumper/Skirt:
Grs. K-3 – school plaid or solid navy blue jumper.
Grs. 4-6 – school plaid or solid navy blue skirt, middle of the knee or longer.
Grs. 7-8 - solid navy or khaki skirt.
Shoes:
Regular tennis shoes only that can be worn for gym. Any color. Cannot make black marks on floors. Must tie or Velcro.
Socks:
Solid white, navy blue or black only. Must cover ankles. May be crew, knee-high, or tights.
Gym Clothes: Grs. K - 8
Shorts – Solid navy blue or navy blue with white stripe, middle of the knee
Shirt - School gym shirt only. Purchased at school office
Shoes - Regular tennis shoes, any color, must tie or Velcro.
Sweats - Solid navy blue or navy with a white stripe. Must be worn to and from school during
winter months. (Gym shorts may be worn under sweats).
Jewelry: No jewelry may be worn during gym.
Sweatshirts:
Solid royal blue only. Must have an official St. Joseph School Logo. May be crew or hoodie. A uniform turtleneck, shirt, jumper must be worn under the sweatshirt
Walking Shorts:
May be worn August/September 2018 and May/June 2019 (weather permitting)
Grs. K-6: Solid navy blue with no decorations, middle of the knee.
Girls may wear a solid navy skort with a flap only in the front.
Grs. 7-8: Solid navy blue or khaki walking shorts.
Sweaters:
Solid navy or royal blue or white only. May be cardigan, crew, or vest.
Jewelry:
One small cross or religious necklace, wrist watch (but, no Smart Watches or any watch that has Internet or texting capabilities) and/or one small ring.
Girls only – one post ear ring per ear.
Hair:
Clean, natural, age-appropriate, neatly trimmed and above the eyes.
Girls – hair bands and clips (white, blue, or school plaid only)
Boys – No longer than the bottom of the ears.
Make-up:
Lip moisturizer may be used and is recommended especially during the winter months.
Fingernails must be trimmed and unpolished. No artificial nails.
Mass Uniforms:
Girls – Uniform jumper/skirt/blouse required. Sweater/Sweatshirt optional.
Boys- Uniform slacks, button-down, collared, white dress shirt and tie required.
Dress shoes (solid black, navy blue, white or brown) recommended but not required. No walking shorts or hoodies.
Dress-Down Days:
There will be some dress-down days throughout the school year. Only clothes appropriate for school may be worn.
The Uniform Policy is reviewed annually and will be strictly enforced so students can concentrate on their studies and development. Parents need to check their children’s clothes before they leave for school in the morning. All final decisions about the Uniform Policy are made by the principal.
